Collection consists of 24 letters to Mrs. Charles Fairchild (Elizabeth Nelson Fairchild) from Jane Whyte Balfour, aunt of Robert Louis Stevenson, and 5 letters from Stevenson's mother, Margaret Isabella (Balfour) Stevenson. Also included are single letters from Mrs. H. Balfour, Mrs. F.V. de G. Stevenson and an unsigned letter of Robert Louis Stevenson to Mrs. Fairchild dated Apia, Samoa Jan. 21, 1890 (apparently never mailed) conveyed to Mrs. Fairchild in 1895 by Isobel Strong.

Robert Lewis (later changed to "Louis") Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. He attended the University of Edinburgh intending to become a civil engineer like his father, but ill health curtailed his studies and prompted him to travel to warmer climates. This inspired Stevenson to write stories, novels and essays about his travels. While in France he met American artist Fanny Osbourne.
